GPDT's advances are to the diesel engine what the invention of the telephone was to the telegraph.
Faster injector opening and closing has long been known to reduce emissions formation. Therefore, the fastest possible actuator is needed for the servo valve on injectors that still use it to port pressure to operate the injector needle.
United States Patent 7,255,290 predicted how to obtain higher speed from a new actuator technology.
After 7,255,290 issued, GPDT was incorporated in 2008 to
test this prediction. The dated methodology used for making this prediction underestimated speed and seriously underestimated lift. Given this speed and lift and the already known high force capability, GPDT's actuator technology eliminates the slow servo valve since it can directly drive the needle.
GPDT offers previously unavailable continuous and durable control over each entire injection event.
Test hardware proves these control features.
- GPDT's latest prototype injector design has no servo valve.
- Needle lift is proportional to electrical current flowing through the actuator. Because current can be held steady for any length of time anywhere in its range, the needle can be stopped for any length of time at any intermediate lift anywhere in its range, thus varying at will the rate at which fuel is injected.
- Needle speed is proportional to the rate at which electrical current increases or decreases.
